Spicy Thai Basil Stir Fry (Pad Kra Prao) With Squid Recipe

This is a popular spicy stir fry that can be made from scratch in under 10 minutes. The ingredients are all very easily available, and the simple to prepare. We have made ours with squid however minced pork, chicken, beef and shrimp are all popular options.

We have used 4 red bird eye chillies in this recipe, however if you are sensitive to spice, you might want to only use 1 or 2. Traditionally holy basil is used but that can be hard to find in western countries, so we have just used basil leaves. If you can find holy basil, use that instead!

  • 300g squid
  • 2 cloves of finely chopped garlic
  • 1/2 onion thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp dark soy sauce
  • 1 1/2 tbsp fish sauce
  • 1 1/2 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 4 chopped red bird eye chillies
  • 1 cup basil leaves
  • 1/8 cup green beans finely chopped
  • 1/8 cup baby corn finely chopped

Step 1: Heat 2 tbsp of cooking oil in a wok on a high heat, then add 2 cloves of finely chopped garlic and 1/2 a thinly sliced onion. Stir fry for a about 30 seconds, then add, 1/8 cup of finely chopped green beans, and 1/8 cup of finely chopped baby corn, and stir fry for another 20 seconds or so.

Step 2: Now add 300g squid and 2 tbsp dark soy sauce, and stir fry for about 2 minutes.

Step 3: Add 4 chopped red bird eye chillies, 1 1/2 tbsp oyster sauce, and 1 1/2 tbsp fish sauce. Stir fry for another 2 minutes or so.

Step 4: Finally, turn off the heat, add 1 cup of basil leaves, stir one final time, and serve. We had ours with some steamed jasmine rice and a fried egg.
